Easts VS Sarsfields Summer comp' decider.
In what was possibly one of the fastest games of Gaelic football ever
played at Willawong, Easts Celts defeated Sarsfields to take out the first
Summer Competition title last night under lights. With the bulk of
possession, and accurate long-distance kicking, Sarsfields looked strong
in the first half and out-played the Celts. Determined play and clever
passing from the Celts side in the second half kept them in the game until
the turning point when a strong three-pointer was registered with about
six minutes remaining. From this point onward, the Celts lifted in
enthusiasm and commitment. With only seconds left in the game and a one
point lead, the Celts managed to put the ball into the back of the net for
the second time and put the game beyond doubt.
The Easts side, being primarily Aussie Rules players from the Sandgate
club are to be congratulated for their efforts in this competition, and
the final game in particular. Only three had played Gaelic football
before. They picked up the rules quickly, played in a determined fashion
that was both tough and fair, and won the competition against a Sarsfields
side which has plenty of Gaelic football ability and experience. The
un-selfish, passing style of play shown by the Sandgate boys should be an
example to all established East Celts players for the upcoming 2004
season.

Well done to the sandgate boys (easts yellow) on wednesday nite taking out the grand final against sarsfield in a tight match. Its been a funny six weeks for the aussie rules boys learning the rules as we go, not game enough to kick the ball to targets rather handballing our way up the field and taking thousands of shots at goal only to get a few.
The game started in our favour dominating territory but unable to convert, david bugeja however surprised everyone when he kicked true over the bar to put the boys in front 1-0. The battle of the brothers brad (easts) and sean (sarsfield) suitor raged on in the easts forward line with sean shutting down his older brother not letting him getting a touch. sarsfield put two points on quickly and could have been much more if not for the tight on the line defence of adam fabian.
The second half was a cracker, sarsfield raced ahead kicking another couple of points before the boys turned up a notch and turned the game, mark thomas was untouchable blistering speed saw him put pressure on sarsfield turning the ball over and pumping it into our forward line and kicking an amazing point from 35 yards out, desperate defence saved us in the last five minutes dan and cookie proving a brick wall that sarsfield just couldnt break through. After half time sean left his brother brad in the forward line which proved their undoing, brad kicking two goals to seal the win by 4 points and has bragging rights in the family home, eat a **** sean.
Thanks goes to david bugeja who organised the boys each week making sure we had enough players and show up on time. Thanks to all the easts supporters who were there on wed nite your support was appreciated very much by the boys and hopefully we can drag a few of the guys into our side next season and grab a championship, go the celts!!!
Matt.
