Easts Celts Women - Match Reports 2008

It is with great pleasure that I write this match report after today's game.
From the opening throw won by Lynda, it was very plain to see that the Celts women were on a mission today totally dominating the game. The backline of Vicki, Pam and Ruth with Erin in goals combining with the halfback line of Fiona, Karen and Amanda was like a brick wall only giving up 3 scoring shots in 60 minutes of football. This was the corner stone for the forwards to launch attacking raid after attacking raid. It was without a doubt the best game of the season to date even surpassing the brilliant effort against Shamrocks last week.
Stand outs for the Celts today were the Back 3 of Ruth, Fiona and Amanda who i thought had outstanding games giving their opposites no chance of scoring points. In the forwards Sarah seemed to score with every touch, and her combination with Jess gave John Mitchels headaches throughout the forward line. Great game girls. And all i can say to the girls now is 2 MORE TO GO!!!

Easts Celts Ladies played extremely well against a tough opposition on Sunday. The ladies were out to salvage some pride against Shamrock's after losing by a cricket score last time we played them...and so we did. Congratulations to all players for an excellent performance.
Shamrocks ladies are among the frontrunners to win the competition and as always came out playing hard. A great job by both Pam and Erin in the goals, they each had some magnificent saves. Special mention to Ruth for almost shutting one of Shamrock's top scorers out of the game (almost is as close as anyone will get to shutting Boots down), and to Vicki for performing the toughest job in the game...marking Trish Brown for the whole game.
Our forwards, not to be outdone also had a great game getting our 2nd highest score this season against one of the toughest oppositions. Well done girls!. Special mention for the forwards goes to Sarah who had an awesome game scoring 3 goals in her first full game in the forward line. There was some great movements up front this week and we’re starting to take our shots when they’re on.
There's been some tremendous improvement in the ladies team this year and the secret to continuing this will be keeping our girls uninjured as there's been a few already this season and getting as many people as possible to training to work on the combinations so we can get some consistency.
Overall it might go down in the scorebook as a loss for the Celts ladies, but anyone that saw the game knows the Celts had one of the best games yet and the scary thing is there’s still room for improvement. Keep up the good work ladies.

Unfortunately Sarsfields didn't have enough players to field a team against us, so we played a scratch match 10-a-side instead.
I thought all players involved had good games but with the scratch match in mind I feel the players found it hard to play to their best. But all in all the game was very pleasing.

The game was as expected a very tight one. We held out Souths for a good part of the first half when both teams started trading points until Nat Conner slotted a very neat over the top of the Souths Keeper, one bounce, in the net, goal at the end of the first half, which had us going into the sheds at the break at 5 points all.
The second half was very different story to the first. With Souths coming out with something that we had lacking, they went looking for the ball, the points and the win. They were more hungry then we were, piling on the points in the second half to totally out play us. But to Easts credit we never give up. I think the one of the main factors of the game was we didn't have the fitness to go with Souths and we must pick that up if we are to challenge Souths again.

You can go into a game against the reigning champions with caution, or you can hurl it to the wind and take the game with two hands.
Easts Women did exactly that against Harps, putting them on the back foot from the ball up. Ali G and Amanda Layther in the midfield hassled their opponents and created some beautiful attacking plays, linking up with Sarah Duncan in the half forward line. Amanda bravely played on after suffering a nasty head clash early on in the game. The fullback line of Erene, Ruth and Vicki bore the brunt of the Harps attack and tackled well to deprive Harps of any scores over the bar in the first half (maybe they got one or two!) But Harps had to fight hard to even penetrate the back line, with Peta Hollinshead again this week putting everything on the line as a standout at left halfback. There were some beautiful moves up the right hand side, with some great leads by Michele Beutel, who stepped up playing in a new position at half forward.
As usual, Easts never gave up when victory was out of reach and fought to the very end, with Harps having to work very hard for their scores to take the game.

This week's game saw a lot of determination from the Celts, but not a lot of luck going our way. Despite some big efforts we were unable to shut down Sarsfields ball carriers. As usual the ladies put in 100% right to the final whistle. I thought we played under our best today, not due to a lack of effort, it just didn't work for us on the day. However given we weren't at our best, the scoreline of 1-2 (5) to 3-7 (16) (and their final goal only a couple of minutes before the end of play being a bit controversial) is an encouraging sign from previous seasons. Hopefully there’s a few more wins on the horizon for the Celts ladies.
New players Michelle and Jess are showing some real potential and look like they are getting a good feel for the game now and will only improve more as the season progresses.
Pam and Erin K both had great games in the goals for us, saving many shots in their respective efforts.
Unfortunately we had our first football related injury of the season with Nat heading to the PA Emergency with a badly dislocated finger. It looks like she'll be spending a few weeks on the sideline. We wish her the best of luck with her recovery.

Well, what a start!
A great game was had by all, from goalie to full forward. It's been a while since our last victory against Souths.
A big mention goes to Sarah who spent the first half in goals, and the second half in the forwards scoring 2-1.
And also Vicki and Ruth given the job of shutting down Souths big guns in the second half.
All and all a great day for the Celts!
