Introducing Easts Celts exciting recruit Helmy Souvannavong. Having excelled at several other codes, Helmy is trying his hand at yet another type of football and is playing Gaelic Football with Easts.
After playing Rugby Union at high school, Helmy made the switch to rugby league at QUT and after several successful yet injury plagued seasons was chosen this year as a winger for the Brisbane Capitals representative side that competed in Rockhampton against other Queensland regional teams.
Despite being left out of the Queensland side, Helmy arrived home to be told he’d been selected for the Pacific Island team to compete in the Student World Cup in Brisbane. After a thrilling 48-46 victory over Ireland and a heavy 36-6 defeat at the hands of the French, Helmy’s Pacific Island team almost caused the boil-over of the tournament, narrowly going down 30-24 to the star studded English.
Of Laos and Indonesian descent, and in his third year at Uni studying Medical Engineering, Helmy took on Gaelic Football purely for off-season fitness but has taken a distinct liking to the mental and physical intensity of the game and the friendly club atmosphere at Easts
Having been brought down to Willawong by a friend, Helmy almost signed with rival club Shamrocks but somehow ended up with Easts. After several games with Easts senior side, it is evident Helmy is bound to be a big asset to the club and everyone at the Celts is glad he signed with us when he did!
